Volleyball rematches against Dillard, SUNO

The Wiley University volleyball team will head to New Orleans for Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) rematches against Dillard University (La.) at 7 p.m. Friday and Southern University at New Orleans (La.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

 

Both matches will be streamed on HBCU-Plus, available online or users can download the free application on their mobile devices or Smart TVs. Live statistics will also be available. The links are listed in the volleyball schedule on wileyathletics.com.

 

The Lady Wildcats (2-9, 2-5 HBCUAC) are coming off winning two of three matches at last weekend's HBCUAC Pod at Fisk University. They swept Wilberforce University (Ohio) and Rust College (Miss.). Shyla Starks recorded 35 kills. Maria Luiza Chaves tallied 46 assists, including a career-high 20 against Rust College. Nadia Cortez put down 16 service aces. She leads the conference and ranks eighth in the NAIA with 0.78 aces per set. T'aja Hardy posted 14 digs for her third double-digit match of the season.

Wiley suffered defeats against Dillard and SUNO in its initial matches at Alumni Gymnasium in September. Against Dillard, Wiley was out-hit .212-(-).072 and 30-17 in kills. It made 23 attacking errors with six off Lady Bleu Devil blocks. The Lady Wildcats struggled serving with four aces and 11 errors. In the September 21 match against SUNO, The Lady Wildcats were out-hit .195 to .030 and outscored 33-32 in kills.

Dillard (7-5, 5-1 HBCUAC) won two out of three matches in its HBCUAC Pod at Tougaloo College. It swept Oakwood University (Ala.) and Stillman College (Ala.) and fell to the defending conference champion Talladega College (Ala.). Cadence Thomas recorded 16 kills, hitting .476. She also recorded five block assists. Nanyelis Moreno recorded 57 assists, 10 digs and two service aces. Neveah Bax tallied 35 digs. The Lady Bleu Devils are ranked third in the conference.

Southern University at New Orleans (1-13, 1-6 HBCUAC) is on a four-match losing streak after coming up empty in the pod and suffering a four-set loss against Tougaloo College on Tuesday. It will face Philander Smith University on Friday. Taszia Anderson put up 18 kills in the three-match pod last weekend. Trinity Bloodworth provided 28 assists. Armoni Harris picked up 48 digs.

Wiley ranks eighth in the standings, holding a half-match lead over Wilberforce. The top eight will advance to the 2024 HBCUAC Volleyball Championship in November.
