Volleyball finishes pod with sweep over Rust College
NASHVILLE - Wiley University volleyball player Shyla Starks recorded 11 kills to lead the Lady Wildcats to a sweep over Rust College (25-9, 25-17, 25-14) in the final match of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) pod hosted by Fisk University at the Henderson A. Johnson Arena Saturday.
Starks recorded her third double-digit match of the season as she guided an attack that produced 36 kills. Nadia Cortez followed with seven, Rachelle Santos and Johna Davis each had six. Santos led the team with seven service aces. The Lady Wildcats outhit the Lady Bearcats .204 to -.042. Maria Luiza Chaves put up 20 assists and six service aces. Wiley dominated on the serve with 17 aces to Rust's one.
Defensively, T'aja Hardy led the team with 14 digs - marking her third game with double-digit digs. Santos recorded two block assists. Chaves and Davis each had one.
Wiley (2-9, 2-5 HBCUAC) recorded double-digit kills in all three sets. It took advantage of three errors by Rust and Santos tallied two kills to take a 13-8 lead. The Lady Wildcats closed the set on a 12-point run, which included three aces by Chaves and kills from Santos and Cortez.
Santos recorded three consecutive service aces in the second set to open up a 7-1 lead. Wiley made five attacking and a service error allowing Rust to take a one-point lead. Two kills by Madisyn Moore put the Lady Wildcats back in front. Cortez got two kills and a service ace to increase the lead to five. Starks put down three kills to help the Lady Wildcats close the set.
Davis recorded a kill and assisted on a block with Santos. Cortez recorded a kill and Chaves posted two aces to increase the lead to seven. Two aces by Santos and kills from Davis, Starks and Cortez helped clinch the match.
The Lady Wildcats will head to New Orleans for rematches against Dillard University on October 4 and Southern University at New Orleans on October 5.
