Volleyball heads to Fisk for first HBCUAC Pod
The Wiley University volleyball team will meet the East Division of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) for the first time when it travels to a pod at Fisk University on Friday and Saturday.
The Lady Wildcats (0-8, 0-4 HBCUAC) will open against Wilberforce University at 2 p.m. Friday followed by a 6 p.m. match against the host Fisk. They will close the pod against Rust College at 9 a.m. Saturday. All the games will stream on the Fisk Volleyball YouTube Channel.
Wiley is still searching for its first win, however, it had its best attacking match against Centenary College of Louisiana on Tuesday. It recorded 35 kills in 114 attempts for a .175 hitting percentage. Shyla Starks led the team with 13 kills - recording her second consecutive double-digit kills match. Lynnetra Taylor provided 17 assists with Maria Luiza Chaves following with 12. Rachelle Santos provided seven kills and four service aces. Maria Guinyard led the team with 10 digs.
Wilberforce (2-14, 2-4 HBCUAC) picked up its first two victories in program history over Rust College on Tuesday. Through 11 matches, Jada Griffin leads the team with 38 kills, 80 digs and eight service aces. Mackenzie Anderson follows with 29. Dolceanna Crosby and Jamaya Johnson have split time at setter. Crosby leads the team with 58 assists followed by Johnson's 35. Anderson leads with eight total blocks.
Fisk (11-11, 4-0 HBCUAC) leads the conference by a half-match after avenging last season's conference championship defeat with a five-set victory over Talladega College. Reagan Jones won her fourth HBCUAC Attacker of the Week and Trinity Britt claimed her fifth Setter of the Week award. Jones leads the conference with 278 kills - an average of 3.71 per set. She ranks sixth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in total kills. Britt leads the HBCUAC and ranks ninth nationally with 635 assists. Nialah Gupton leads the conference with 312 digs.
Rust (0-12, 0-4) seeks its first victory. It is in its first season under Venecca Green. Through eight matches, Gabriella Gabriel leads the Lady Bearcats with 16 kills and 25 digs. Cameryn Morris leads with 16 assists. Musha Alhassan leads the Lady Bearcats with four solo blocks.
Friday will mark the first time Wiley and Wilberforce have met. It fell three times to Fisk last season, including the conference quarterfinals. The Lady Wildcats have won one of the five meetings. They are 3-2 against Rust College with both losses coming last season.
