Volleyball falls short against Dillard

After being outplayed in the first set, the Wiley College volleyball team battled in the last two sets against the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference leader Dillard University. It came up short in a three-set loss (25-9, 26-24, 25-21).

The Lady Wildcats (2-11, 2-5 GCAC) fall to 1-5 at home. In the first set, they were outhit .316 to -.154. Wiley College only put down five kills and made nine attack errors. It gave up nine kills and only force the Lady Bleu Devils into three errors. A pair of five-point runs helped Dillard seize control.

Wiley College trailed by as many as seven. Shayla Arthur got two kills and assisted on a block with Rejinah Hickman to cut the margin to one. Trailing by two, Arthur got an ace and Hickman a kill to tie the set at 23. The Lady Wildcats moved within a point of tying the match on a set error. They were unable to finish off the Lady Bleu Devils – giving up two kills and a block.

Needing to win to extend the match, the Lady Wildcats fell behind by eight after allowing a nine-point run. They pulled within three on a kill by Hickman but were unable to stop Dillard from clinching the match.

For the third time in four matches, Arthur led the Lady Wildcats in kills with seven. Shyla Starks and Hickman followed with five. Kyra Woods put up 11 assists and four digs. Nadia Cortez added 10 assists, 2 aces and two digs. Fatima Ortega played libero for the first time in her career and led the team with 13 digs. Arthur and Hickman had a block assist.

Wiley College will wrap up its homestand on Thursday against Paul Quinn College. It will look to avenge a four-set loss it suffered on August 22.
