Volleyball struggles against Talladega
The Wiley College volleyball was unable to gain a boost from the home crowd as it fell to Talladega College in three sets (25-18, 25-12, 25-12) Friday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (2-10, 2-4 GCAC) drop to 1-4 at home. They were outhit .293 to -.039 and outscored 39-16 in kills. Eight of Wiley College's 19 attack errors came on blocks by the Tornadoes. It blocked six attacks. The pass and receive game went to Talladega as the Lady Wildcats gave up eight aces and made three errors. They put down four aces and benefited from five errors by the Tornadoes.
Johna Davis led the Lady Wildcats with five kills. She also contributed a solo block and a block assist. Shyla Starks followed with four kills. LeAndria Jackson put up 14 assists and seven digs. Nadia Cortez led with 11 digs. Shayla Arthur posted a team-high two solo blocks and a block assist.
Wiley College briefly led at the beginning of the second set. Talladega went on lengthy runs to take control of all three sets. The third set was the only set that the Lady Wildcats had more kills than attack errors.
The homestand continues on at 1 p.m. Saturday against Dillard University. The Lady Bleu Devils bested Philander Smith University in four sets to remain unbeaten in the GCAC.
