Volleyball falls at Centenary

SHREVEPORT, La. – The Wiley College volleyball team was unable to match Centenary College of Louisiana in a three-set loss (25-16, 25-15, 25-17) Wednesday at the Gold Dome.

The Lady Wildcats (0-5) drop their third match away from home. They were outhit .152 to -.043 and outscored 35-20 in kills. Wiley College was also outdone on the serve – putting down four aces and making four errors, while Centenary tallied nine aces and only committed four errors. On defense, the Lady Wildcats topped the Ladies 44-43 in digs and 4-3 in blocks.

Zykeya Hunt led the Lady Wildcats with six kills. Rejinah Hickman followed with five. LeAndria Jackson put up 10 assists and Nadia Cortez followed with 11. Jackson also recorded two service aces. Shyla Starks led the team with 11 digs. T'aja Hardy also reached double figures with 10. Hunt had a solo block and a block assist. Ashlee Traylor and Hickman each had two block assists.

Wiley College kept pace with Centenary in the first set. After falling behind early, three attack errors and a kill by Hickman gave the Lady Wildcats their first lead. A service error and two set errors helped the Ladies go on a six-point run and cruise to a first-set victory.

The Lady Wildcats were unable to gain momentum in the last two sets. They held an early one-point lead in the second set. Four attack errors and two receiving errors allowed Centenary to go on an eight-point run. Wiley College never held the lead in the final set.

Wiley College will return home and open Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play on Friday against Tougaloo College. It will face Rust College on Saturday in a rematch of last season's GCAC Quarterfinal. The Lady Bulldogs are looking for their first victory after dropping their first five matches. They will visit Jarvis Christian University on Thursday. Rust opened conference play on Tuesday with a three-set loss against Talladega College. It has lost 10 of its first 12 matches.
