Women's Soccer rallies to tie Centenary in home finale
Wiley University women's soccer player Yajaira Hernandez scored her fourth goal to help the Lady Wildcats rally for a 1-1 tie in their home finale against Centenary College of Louisiana Wednesday at Pemberton Field.
Playing in her final home game, Hernandez stole the ball, dribbled it upfield and kicked it past Centenary goalkeeper Zoe Keller to tie the game in the 64th minute. She had five shots with four on goal.
"I knew I had to score," Hernandez said. "I just went hard for the goal and kicked it. I wasn't expecting it because I'm a defender and that's not usually my position."
Wiley (1-6-1, 1-0 CAC) finished 1-1-1 at home. It was outshot 13-12 and 7-6 in shots on goal. The Lady Wildcats had more corner kicks with three to one for the Ladies. Nadia Hernandez put up three shots with one on goal. Alexse Orozco took three shots. Destiny Allison stopped six of seven shots with five in the first half.
The Lady Wildcats fell behind in the ninth minute with Centenary's Caila Baldwin scoring off Sarah Crenshaw's deflected shot. Wiley had its opportunities as Yajaira Hernandez put three shots on goal, Nadia Hernandez and Samantha Rodriguez also put up shots.
Nadia Hernandez and Alexse Orozco put up shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half but they were high and wide. After Yajaira Hernandez's tying goal, Centenary put up five shots but they just missed the goal.
Wiley will travel to Arlington Baptist University on Friday for a 2 p.m. match. The teams were supposed to meet in Marshall on September 6 but the contest was canceled due to the Patriots not having enough players.
