Women's Basketball pulls away in Fourth Quarter against Wilberforce

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Playing with only eight players, the Wiley University women's basketball team used grit and determination to extend their season with a 78-71 victory over No. 11 seed Wilberforce University, pulling away in the fourth quarter of the opening round of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Hope Credit Union Basketball Championship at Stillman College's Birthright Alumni Hall.

The Lady Wildcats (13-13) won their tournament opener for the third time in four appearances. They grabbed a 14-11 lead at the end of the first quarter on a 3-pointer by Zacyria Dozier. They took advantage of shooting struggles for the Lady Bulldogs in the second quarter. Shots by Kelechi Dike and Kendall Campbell gave Wiley a nine-point lead. It went into the locker room up by seven.

With two minutes left in the third quarter, the Lady Wildcats underwent a stretch where they turned the ball over on four consecutive possessions. This allowed Wilberforce to take a one-point lead. Mary Leday sank a 3-pointer near the end of the quarter giving Wiley a 52-50 lead.

With the score tied at 56 with 7:07 remaining, Zacyria Dozier hit a jumper. Campbell stole the in-bounds pass and laid it in to give Wiley a four-point lead. She hit two 3-pointers and Celebria Peacock drained a triple off an offensive rebound by Mya Jones to increase the lead to nine.

For the second consecutive game, Campbell recorded a career-high - scoring 21 points on seven shots, including hitting 4-for-6 from 3-point territory. Dike followed with 14 points and eight rebounds. Leday drained three triples and finished with 14 points, contributing three rebounds and two assists. Peacock finished in double figures with 11 points, adding three rebounds. Jones led the team with nine boards and five assists. Dozier provided four assists and four steals.

The Lady Wildcats will face No. 3 seed Tougaloo College in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m. Friday. They split their meetings with the Lady Bulldogs - pulling out a 67-64 victory at home on February 6 after losing decisively on the road earlier in the season.
