Shorthanded Women's Basketball falls at Dillard

NEW ORLEANS - Playing shorthanded, the Wiley University women's basketball team could not find footing in a 76-53 loss against Dillard University Saturday in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference game at Dent Hall.

The Lady Wildcats (12-12, 8-8 HBCUAC) were without its leading scorer and rebounder Jessica Nerestant and only suited up eight for the second straight game. They drop the season series to Dillard after splitting the last two seasons. The loss drops the Lady Wildcats to sixth in the HBCUAC standings.

Wiley shot 5-for-35 in the first half, including 1-for-11 from 3-point territory. It trailed 8-6 after the first quarter but didn't score until 3:03 in the second. Along with its shooting woes, Wiley turned the ball over nine times, allowing Dillard to go on a 14-point run. Another three-minute scoring drought led to another 14-point run for the Lady Bleu Devils. The Lady Wildcats trailed 37-11 at halftime.

Trailing by 25 in the fourth quarter, Wiley tried to rally. Shots made by Mary Leday, Zacyria Dozier and Kendall Campbell cut the margin to 17. Kewaysha Alsup made a layup to pull Wiley within 14 with 4:51 remaining. It only hit one field goal the rest of the quarter.

Leday led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 16 points and five assists. She hit seven shots. Maya Jones followed with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds. Dozier contributed eight points and four rebounds off the bench.

The Lady Wildcats will close the regular season at the University of the Virgin Islands on Wednesday. The Lady Buccaneers haven't played since losing to Philander Smith University on February 4. Wiley won 86-46 at home on January 18.
