Second Half Surge falls short for Women's Basketball

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - In a thrilling Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) basketball encounter at Mims Gymnasium on Monday, the Wiley University women's basketball team rallied in the second half but could not overcome a double-digit first half deficit in a 68-62 loss to Philander Smith University.

The loss drops Wiley to 3-5 on the road. It loses consecutive games for the first time since opening the season with six straight losses. The Lady Wildcats were missing a few key players. Starting post Elizabeth Camacho missed her seventh straight game due to injury. Kewaysha Alsup and Emilee Proctor were also not present.

The Lady Wildcats (7-10, 5-6 HBCUAC) struggled initially, scoring only one field goal in the first seven minutes, which allowed the Lady Panthers to secure a 13-8 lead. The offensive challenges persisted as Wiley shot 5-for-19 in the second quarter, trailing 31-20 at the break. The situation seemed dire as they fell behind by as much as 18 points with 6:58 left in the third quarter.

In the second half, a surge led by Jessica Nerestant, who scored eight points in the third quarter, helped narrow the gap to 45-40 entering the fourth. A concerted effort in the final quarter brought them close, trailing just two points behind Philander Smith with less than two minutes on the clock. Key plays included layups from Mary Leday and Celebria Peacock, alongside a crucial 3-pointer from Tamia Dolls. Despite their comeback efforts, the Lady Wildcats could not maintain their momentum, failing to secure another field goal in the crucial final moments.

Top performers for Wiley included Dolls with 12 points, and both Leday and Peacock contributing 10 points. Leday added six rebounds and Peacock supplied seven rebounds and four assists. Jessica Nerestant was two rebounds shy of a double-double with 11 points and eight boards. Mya Jones provided eight points and 11 rebounds.

Looking forward, the Lady Wildcats aim to bounce back in their next contest against the College of Biblical Studies at Alumni Gymnasium on Thursday for their first home game in 2025. The team remains focused and ready to improve their standings in the challenging HBCUAC landscape.
