Women's Basketball takes down HBCUAC Leader Stillman

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Wiley University women's basketball player Jessica Nerestant recorded her sixth double-double and Mya Jones scored in double figures to guide the Lady Wildcats to a 46-38 victory over the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) leader Stillman College in a crossover game on Saturday at Birthright Alumni Hall.

The Lady Wildcats (7-8, 5-4 HBCUAC) pick up their third road win and hand Stillman its first conference loss. The victory moves Wiley into fifth in the HBCUAC standings. The 38 points were the fewest allowed by Wiley this season.

Nerestant tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds. She hit five shots and added an assist. Jones scored 10 points, adding five rebounds and a block. Celebria Peacock contributed eight rebounds, seven points and a team-high five assists. Mary Leday tallied seven points, five rebounds and a steal.

Wiley outshot Stillman 36.2 to 23.1 percent. It dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Tigers 50-34. Stillman took the turnover battle 26-14, leading to 21 points. The Lady Wildcats had more contributions from its reserves as they outscored Stillman's bench 12-3.

With the score tied at eight, a 3-pointer by Celebria Peacock sparked a nine-point run. Erin Love made a pair of jumpers and a layup by Leday gave Wiley a 17-8 lead after the first quarter. A jumper by Nerestant gave the Lady Wildcats their largest lead at 21-9 with 5:34 left in the second. They only made one field goal which allowed Stillman to close the gap to 25-20 at halftime.

Nerestant hit a layup and Leday made a 3-pointer to increase the lead to nine with 6:17 remaining. Wiley only made one field goal and Stillman pulled within three at the end of the quarter. The Lady Tigers struck first in the fourth, but Wiley didn't give up the lead. Nerestant made a layup, Peacock hit a jumper and Tamia Dolls, who returned to the lineup after sitting out Friday's game, stole the ball and scored to put Wiley ahead 43-36 with 3:55 left. It only allowed Stillman to hit one shot.

The Lady Wildcats wrap up the HBCUAC Crossover with a 10 a.m. tip on Monday against Oakwood University at Talladega College's Billy C. Hawkins Student Activity Center. The Ambassadors dominated the University of the Virgin Islands 87-59 for its second conference victory on Saturday.
