Women's Basketball locks down Voorhees for Fifth Straight Victory
XENIA, Ohio - Wiley University women's basketball players Jessica Nerestant and Tamia Dolls score in double figures as the Lady Wildcats go unbeaten in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference Crossover with a 55-47 victory over Voorhees University on Tuesday at Athletes in Action Headquarters.
The Lady Wildcats (6-7, 4-3 HBCUAC) extended their winning streak to five games, their longest since 2019-20 when it won five straight from January 23-February 8. They have limited their opponents to under 50 points four times in five games. They move into sixth in the conference standings.
Nerestant led all scorers with 18 points, hitting five shots. She also led the team in rebounds with six and steals with three. Dolls provided 12 points, shooting 4-for-7 and 3-for-3 from 3-point territory. Mary Leday and Celebria Peacock contributed three assists each. Nyathiel Wal matched Nerestant's three steals.
Wiley never trailed. It led 16-10 after the first quarter and took a 25-22 lead into the locker room. Voorhees pulled within two with 4:40 left in the third quarter. A jumper by Mya Jones and a 3-pointer from Dolls stretched the lead to seven. Erin Love made a 3-pointer to give the Lady Wildcats a double-digit lead early in the fourth quarter. They were held scoreless for four minutes, which allowed the Lady Tigers to close the gap to two. A 3-pointer by Dolls and a layup by Leday put Wiley up by nine with 1:35 left in the game.
The Lady Wildcats outshot Voorhees 36.7 to 35.4 percent and 55.6 (5-for-9) to 28.6 (4-for-14) from 3-point territory. The Lady Tigers held the edge on the boards 36-32 but Wiley had the edge in the turnover battle 24-16.
This was Wiley's last game before the holiday break. It will return on December 29 for an exhibition game at National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I institution Prairie View A&M University. The Lady Wildcats resume HBCUAC play on January 3 when they tip off their second HBCUAC Crossver at Talladega College.
