Women's Basketball subdues Rust College for Third Straight Win
XENIA, OHIO - Wiley University women's basketball player Tamia Dolls scored a career-high 20 points and Jessica Nerestant recorded her fourth double-double to lift the Lady Wildcats to a 68-50 victory over Rust College Saturday in the second game of a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Crossover at Athletes in Action Headquarters.
The Lady Wildcats (4-7, 2-3 HBCUAC) pick up their third straight victory and first over Rust College since joining the conference in 2022. It's the first time they've won consecutive conference games since November 28 to December 2, 2023.
Dolls shot 7-for-10 and hit both of her 3-point shot attempts. She added an assist and a steal. Nerestant posted 14 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double in five games, adding five steals. Mary Leday put up 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. It's her fifth double-digit scoring game in her previous six. Celebria Peacock led the team with four assists.
Leday hit a jumper with 5:49 left in the first quarter to spark an 11-point run. Nerestant got a steal and dished to Peacock who scored a layup. Leday made a layup and Nerestant scored a second-chance bucket to give Wiley an eight-point lead and held a 17-9 advantage after the first.
Dolls hit a jumper with 5:09 left in the second to give the Lady Wildcats a double-digit lead. They led by as many as 17 on a second-chance basket by Erin Love with 3:16 remaining. It took a 34-22 lead into the locker room.
Wiley didn't hit a field goal until 5:42 in the third quarter. It turned the ball over three times, which allowed Rust to cut the lead to one. Nerestant made a layup with 2:03 left in the third. Mya Jones made a second-chance bucket and Dolls hit a 3-pointer to increase the lead to 50-44 entering the fourth.
The Lady Wildcats scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter to open up a 14-point lead. They didn't allow the Lady Bearcats to score until 5:11. Rust only hit three of 15 field goal attempts and turned the ball over eight times.
Wiley will face Fisk University at 4 p.m. Monday at Wilberforce University. The Lady Bulldogs picked up their fifth conference victory over the University of the Virgin Islands on Friday.
