Women's Basketball rallies, falls short in Overtime
FT. WORTH, Texas - The Wiley University women's basketball team overcame an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter. It could not finish off Texas Wesleyan University in a 67-65 overtime loss on Saturday in the Sid Richardson Center.
Wiley (1-7, 0-3 HBCUAC) trailed 45-37 entering the fourth. A 3-pointer by Zacyria Dozier and a jumper by Kewaysha Alsup cut the margin to three with 7:30 left in the game. Mary Leday sank a 3-pointer and a layup by Jessica Nerestant tied the game at 47 with 5:01 left. With 2:48 remaining, Leday stole the ball and dished to Nerestant, who gave Wiley a 51-49 lead, its first since the first half.
Texas Wesleyan (7-1, 3-1 SAC) retook the lead on a 3-pointer. Dozier answered and gave the lead back to Wiley with 1:37 remaining. Mya Jones extended the lead to four with a layup with 1:06 left. Two 3-pointers gave the Lady Rams the lead with 29 seconds left. Dozier shot a go-ahead 3-pointer but it was off the mark. Celebria Peacock rebounded the miss and hit a short jumper to tie the game at 58 with less than a second remaining.
The Lady Rams struck first in overtime. Leday hit two shots, including a 3-pointer to give the Lady Wildcats a 65-64 lead with 18 seconds left. A second-chance bucket gave Texas Wesleyan the lead for good. Wiley turned it over on its last two possessions.
Nerestant recorded her second consecutive double-double with a season-high 19 points and 11 rebounds. Leday followed with a season-high of 17 points in a 7-for-13 shooting performance. She contributed four rebounds and four steals. Peacock added six points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.
The Lady Wildcats return to the court on Tuesday for a non-conference game at Arlington Baptist University. The Lady Patriots haven't played since taking on the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in an exhibition game on November 23. They are 0-2, taking losses against University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on November 2 and Paul Quinn College on November 5.
