Women's Basketball shuts down Dallas Christian
Wiley University women's basketball player Jessica Nerestant recorded a double-double and Mary Leday scored in double-digits for the second consecutive game to lift the Lady Wildcats to a 59-46 victory over Dallas Christian College Tuesday at Alumni Gymnasium for their first of the 2024-25 season.
The victory snaps a seven-game losing streak and a six-game home losing skid. Nerestant posted season-highs of 17 points and 17 rebounds, while also contributing five steals and two blocks. Leday tallied a season-best 15 points on five made shots, including two 3-pointers. Celebria Peacock provided eight points and 11 rebounds. Erin Love had her most productive game with nine points and seven rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats (1-6, 0-3 HBCUAC) outshot the Lady Crusaders 32.8 to 21.2 percent. They only allowed them to make one 3-pointer in 20 attempts. Wiley outrebounded Dallas Christian 56-47. The turnover battle went in favor of the Lady Crusaders 24-17.
Wiley scored the first eight points and didn't look back. It led 14-8 after the first quarter. A 3-pointer by Leday with 6:33 left in the quarter increased the margin to double-digits. She scored 11 points helping the Lady Wildcats hold a 33-17 halftime advantage.
Peacock converted an and-one to give the Lady Wildcats a 21-point lead with 2:27 left in the third quarter. Wiley made six turnovers in the fourth quarter, which allowed the Lady Crusaders to pull within 11 with 2:03 left in the game. The Lady Wildcats kept the lead intact, hitting five of six free throw attempts.
Wiley will travel to Texas Wesleyan University at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The teams met at Alumni Gymnasium on November 2 with the Lady Wildcats falling 84-53. The Lady Rams host Nelson University at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
