Women's Basketball unable to overcome Dillard
Wiley University women's basketball players Tamia Dolls and Celebria Peacock provided double-digit scoring performances. Still, the Lady Wildcats fell short against Dillard University 66-55, on Saturday in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) game at Alumni Gymnasium.
Dolls hit three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Peacock scored 11 points, hitting five field goals. Jessica Nerestant grabbed 10 rebounds - recording her first double-digit rebounding game of the season. She was three points shy of a double-double with seven. Mya Jones supplied nine rebounds, a team-high four assists and two steals.
Wiley (0-5, 0-2 HBCUAC) was outshot 36.7 to 31.1 percent but shot better from 3-point territory, as it hit seven of 24, while Dillard only hit three of 19. Twenty-one of the 31 fouls called were on the Lady Wildcats, which led to 27 free throw attempts for the Lady Bleu Devils, who hit 19. Wiley made 10 of 13 attempts.
The battle of the boards went to Dillard 46-39. The Lady Wildcats were edged 17-15 in the turnover battle, but outscored the Lady Bleu Devils 17-14 in points off turnovers.
Wiley trailed nearly the whole game. After allowing the first six points, Elizabeth Camacho hit a jumper and Tamia Dolls nailed a 3-pointer to cut the margin to one with 4:31 left in the first. The Lady Wildcats missed four 3-pointers and turned the ball over twice. Dillard closed the quarter on a 7-2 run and put Wiley in a 13-7 deficit. It trailed by as many as 10 in the second quarter and went into the locker behind 32-24.
Dillard (4-1, 2-0 HBCUAC) led 41-29 with 5:06 left in the third quarter. Peacock hit two shots and Kewaysha Alsup made a jumper to cut the lead in half. A 3-pointer by Mary Leday and a second-chance bucket by Nerestant pulled Wiley within three entering the fourth quarter.
The Lady Wildcats did not make a field goal in the first four minutes of the fourth. Dillard increased its lead to 12 and Wiley could not rally, as it shot 3-for-16 and 2-for-10 from 3-point territory.
Wiley will travel to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I institution Stephen F. Austin State University for an exhibition game. It will resume HBCUAC play at Tougaloo College on November 23. The Lady Bulldogs picked up their first win over LeMoyne Owen College on Saturday. They play their first HBCUAC game on November 21.
