Women's Basketball falls short against Huston-Tillotson University
AUSTIN, Texas - The Wiley University women's basketball team rallied from a double-digit first-quarter margin but could not hold off Huston-Tillotson University in a 65-47 loss Saturday in the Austin Area Urban League Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Live Xperience Classic at the Austin Convention Center.
The Lady Wildcats (0-3) open with three consecutive losses for the first time since 2021-22. They trailed 20-9 after the first quarter, which they shot 4-for-17 and turned the ball over seven times. Wiley regrouped in the second quarter. Zacyria Dozier, who made her season debut, hit two 3-pointers to cut the margin to two. A 3-pointer by Tamia Dolls gave Wiley a 26-25 lead with 3:03 remaining. The lead switched hands thrice as the Lady Wildcats trailed 29-28 at halftime.
Wiley gained the lead twice on a jump shot by Dozier and a 3-pointer by Mya Jones, who also played her first game of the season. It turned the ball over twice and missed two shots, which led to a seven-point run by the Rams. Jumpers by Mary Leday and Jones brought the Lady Wildcats within one with 4:40 left. They did not make a field goal the rest of the quarter. Three turnovers helped the Rams close on a 13-1 run. Wiley's next made shot was with 7:24 left in the fourth quarter.
Dozier led the Lady Wildcats with 10 points and added two rebounds. Emilee Proctor and Celebria Peacock followed with seven. Proctor contributed six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Elizabeth Camacho led the team with seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Wiley will return home and open HBCU Athletic Conference play against Southern University at New Orleans on Thursday. The Knights picked up their first win of the season over Thomas University on Saturday.
