Women's Basketball ends season in GCAC Quarterfinals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - For the second straight season, the Wiley University women's basketball team ends its season in the quarterfinals with an 86-53 loss to the No. 2 seed Philander Smith University Thursday in the 2024 Hope Credit Union Women's Basketball GCAC Championship at Stillman College's Birthright Alumni Hall.

The Lady Wildcats finish the 2023-24 season 12-16, their first under head coach DeWitte Mandley. Kiersten Harris and Jay'lann Myles played in their final game. Jamiya Eaddy, Minnie Miller and Diamond Hawthorne also wrapped their playing careers but were inactive for the tournament.

Myles led the team with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Harris followed with 11 points, three rebounds and three assists. Kewaysha Alsup added eight points, four assists and two steals. Alayia Francis put up eight points. Elizabeth Camacho led the team with seven rebounds.

Wiley was outshot 46.3 to 31.1 percent, including 41.4 to 19.2 percent from 3-point territory. It fell short on the glass 42-41 and in the turnover battle 22-20. Sixteen of Philander Smith's takeaways came off steals.

The Lady Wildcats briefly led in the first quarter off baskets from Myles and Cailan Hale. In under four minutes, Wiley missed all five shots and turned the ball over thrice. Philander Smith took advantage and put Wiley in an eight-point hole. A 3-pointer by Harris and four free throws from Francis trimmed the margin to 18-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Hale made a layup to pull Wiley within two early in the second quarter. It did not score for nearly six minutes. Philander Smith went on a 13-point run to increase its lead to double-digits. Wiley shot 2-for-11 in the second quarter and went into the locker room trailing 39-19.

The Lady Wildcats could not rally in the second half as Philander Smith shot 12-for-19 in the third quarter and hit seven of 12 three-point attempts.

Most of the roster is expected to return, including starters Hale, Alsup and Camacho. Mandley and assistant coach Nigel Mayfield will recruit aggressively to strengthen the roster for a deeper postseason run in 2024-25.
