On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats of Wiley University lost to Oakwood University 88-71 in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game at Alumni Gymnasium despite career-scoring highs from Cailan Hale and Alayia Francis.
The Lady Wildcats (11-9, 6-6 GCAC) went 2-5 on their homestand. They played without their leading scorer Jamiya Eaddy, who is averaging 13.3 points per game, for the third time in the last four games.
Hale scored 18 points - hitting six of 10 shots. She added four rebounds and two assists. Francis scored 14 points, hitting seven of 11 shots. She posted a team-high six assists. Minnie Miller led the team with eight rebounds. She also contributed eight points and two blocks.
Wiley trailed 39-26 at halftime after shooting 1-for-15 in the second quarter. It allowed Oakwood to hit 50 percent of its shots. The Lady Wildcats rallied in the third quarter.
Hale scored seven points, including an and-one. Cooper, Kiersten Harris and Dolls hit 3-pointers. Jay'lann Myles made a layup to cut the margin to one. Miller tied the game at 47 from the foul line. Wiley could not gain the lead, trailing 56-53 after three.
Oakwood (6-12, 4-6 GCAC) jumped out in the fourth quarter, pushing its lead to eight. A layup by Hale pulled Wiley within five. The Ambassadors scored seven unanswered points - increasing its lead to double digits.
The Lady Wildcats will travel to the University of Virgin Islands on Thursday. The Lady Buccaneers fell 62-53 against Southern University at New Orleans on Saturday.
