Women's Basketball falls short against Fisk
The Wiley University women's basketball team outshot the co-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference leader Fisk University but lost the battle of the boards in a 62-53 loss Thursday at Alumni Gymnasium.
The Lady Wildcats (11-8, 6-5 GCAC) drop to 2-4 on the homestand and 7-4 overall at home. They lose both meetings against the Lady Bulldogs for the second consecutive season.
Wiley outshot Fisk 30.9 to 28.4 percent, including 31 to 7.7 percent from 3-point territory. It was overwhelmed on the glass, only grabbing 29 rebounds while allowing 64. Fisk turned 27 offensive rebounds into 25 points. Wiley only had two offensive boards and wasn't able to score. Additionally, the Lady Wildcats were called for 28 fouls to 16 against the Lady Bulldogs. They outscored Wiley 23-10 from the free-throw line.
Ashunti Cooper led the Lady Wildcats with 18 points. She hit six of nine shots, including four of six from 3-point territory. Cooper also added four steals and two rebounds. Tamia Dolls followed with 10 points, nailing three 3-pointers. Jamiya Eaddy returned to the lineup - providing nine points and a team-high six rebounds. Kiersten Harris and Alayia Francis provided four assists each. Minnie Miller blocked three shots.
Both teams held leads in the first half. Fisk led by as many as four and Wiley led by as many as two. Dolls hit two 3-pointers in the final minute of the first half giving Wiley the lead. The teams went into the locker room tied at 24 at halftime.
The Lady Wildcats grabbed a five-point lead early in the third quarter. Fisk received a technical foul for being late returning to the court for the third quarter. Cooper hit a 3-pointer on Wiley's first possession. The Lady Wildcats did not score for almost seven minutes. The Lady Bulldogs went on a 13-point run - to take an eight-point lead.
Wiley pulled within three on a 3-pointer by Cooper with 6:21 remaining. It missed its next four shots and turned the ball over. Fisk pushed its advantage to nine.
The Lady Wildcats will wrap up their homestand on Saturday against Oakwood University. The Ambassadors fell 93-49 against Philander Smith University on Thursday.
