Women's Basketball shuts down Oakwood

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Four Wiley University women's basketball players scored in double figures to lift the Lady Wildcats to a 75-58 victory over Oakwood University Saturday at Ashby Auditorium.

Diamond Hawthorne led the team with 14 points - adding eight rebounds and an assist. Tamia Dolls hit three 3-pointers off the bench to finish with 11 points. Jamiya Eaddy put up 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and five steals. Jay'lann Myles tallied 10 points and five rebounds. Minnie Miller led the team with nine rebounds and added seven points.

The Lady Wildcats (9-4, 4-1 GCAC) outshot the Ambassadors 43.9 to 35.8 percent. They outrebounded them 40-32, including 15-10 on the offensive glass. Wiley outscored Oakwood 24-4 in points off turnovers and 15-11 in second-chance points. It forced Oakwood into 20 turnovers while only committing 10.

The Ambassadors (3-9, 1-3 GCAC) took an early lead. A jumper by Kiersten Harris helped the Lady Wildcats shift the momentum. Hawthorne put them ahead with a layup with three minutes remaining. A 3-pointer by Eaddy and a jumper by Miller increased the lead to seven. Wiley led 16-11 after the first quarter.

Oakwood made an early run and cut the margin to two. Dolls hit a 3-pointer, Eaddy made a jumper and stole the ball. Hawthorne hit a layup to give the Lady Wildcats a 29-18 lead with three minutes left in the second quarter. They would hold an eight-point lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Ambassadors got within six points. Myles made two layups to increase Wiley's lead to 13. It led by eight entering the fourth quarter. 

An and one by Miller would spark a 12-point run for the Lady Wildcats in the fourth quarter. A 3-pointer by Dolls increased the margin to 20. Wiley didn't allow the Ambassadors to score until 6:02 remaining.

The Lady Wildcats will continue their road trip on Monday with an exhibition game against National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I school Grambling State University.
