Women's Basketball outlasts SUNO
NEW ORLEANS - Wiley University women's basketball players Diamond Hawthorne and Jay'lann Myles recorded double-doubles as the Lady Wildcats overcame a fourth-quarter deficit in an 85-75 overtime victory over Southern University at New Orleans Saturday in the Castle.
Wiley (8-3, 3-0 GCAC) extends their winning streak to three. It's the first time it opened conference play with three straight wins since 2015-16. Hawthorne had her highest-scoring game this season with 21 points. She grabbed 12 rebounds and stole the ball five times. Myles put up 16 points and led the team with 15 rebounds. She also added three steals.
Cailan Hale tallied 12 points and seven rebounds. Tamia Dolls contributed 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers to go along with three rebounds. Ashunti Cooper made her first career start. She recorded nine points, five rebounds, and shared the team lead in assists with Kiersten Harris at three.
The Lady Wildcats led 60-58 entering the fourth quarter. Southern-New Orleans hit three 3-pointers in the first two minutes to take a five-point lead. Myles hit two jump shots to cut the margin to one with 2:40 left. She tied the game from the free throw line with 27 seconds left. Both teams had a chance to win but turned the ball over.
Hale gave the Lady Wildcats the lead with a jumper. She scored 10 points in overtime. Her second jump shot increased the lead to eight. Southern-New Orleans committed six fouls and only hit one of its 11 field goal attempts.
The Lady Knights led 22-18 after the first quarter. Kewaysha Alsup tied the game at 28 with a jumper. She got a steal which set up jump shot for Elizabeth Camacho, who put Wiley ahead by two. Dolls hit a three-pointer and Harris made a jumper to extend the lead to seven. Wiley held a 37-34 lead at halftime.
The Lady Wildcats outshot the Lady Knights 44.3 to 32.4 percent. However, SUNO was more successful from long range hitting nine while Wiley only hit five. The battle of the boards went to the Lady Wildcats 56-47.
Wiley will resume GCAC play on Thursday when it travels to Fisk University.
