Women's Basketball falls at Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Wiley College women's basketball team struggled to hit shots in a 79-53 loss to Oklahoma City University Thursday at Abe Lemons Arena.

The Lady Wildcats (1-1) were outshot 49 percent to 31.6 percent. They also lost the turnover battle 11-5 with eight coming off steals. Wiley College was outrebounded 40-34 but held the edge on the offensive glass 15-14.

Diamond Hawthorne led the Lady Wildcats with 15 points while adding six rebounds. Cailan Hale followed with eight points off the bench and supplied three rebounds. Jamiya Eaddy led the team with 10 rebounds. Kiersten Harris put up a team-high three assists. Alayia Francis led in steals with three.

Wiley College only led for a minute early in the first quarter. It didn't score for over four minutes which allowed Oklahoma City to take the lead. A shot by Kewaysha Alsup tied the game but the Lady Wildcats only made one field goal in the last four minutes of the first, allowing the Stars to hold an 11-point lead after one.

Elizabeth Camacho hit three jump shots in the second quarter, to pull the Lady Wildcats within five. They trailed 37-30 at halftime. In the third quarter, Wiley College didn't score in the first three minutes and thirty seconds of the third quarter. It didn't make a field goal – missing on all seven field goal attempts, including three 3-pointers. The Lady Wildcats went nine for 13 from the free throw line. Oklahoma City pushed its lead to 18.

Wiley College returns home and will resume the Highway 80 rivalry against Jarvis Christian University for its 2023 Homecoming Game on Saturday.
