Hawthorne earns Preseason First Team All-GCAC
After being one of the top 10 scorers and rebounders last season, Wiley College women's basketball player Diamond Hawthorne was selected to the Preseason All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference First Team, the conference announced Thursday evening.
The GCAC head women's basketball coaches nominated players and voted. Hawthorne was one of five selected to the first team and one of 10 selected to the Preseason All-GCAC teams. Last season, Hawthorne averaged 11.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game – which ranked in the top 10 of the GCAC. She was a two-time GCAC Player of the Week and earned Second Team All-GCAC. Hawthorne recorded three double-doubles and surpassed 20 points in three games, including against Oakwood on February 11.
Along with the Preseason All-GCAC Teams, the Preseason Poll was also released. The Lady Wildcats were picked fourth – finishing behind the two-time defending champion Rust College, Philander Smith University and Fisk University.
Wiley College went 16-10 last season, including 7-7 in GCAC play. Nine players return, including starters Tamia Dolls and Minnie Miller. The Lady Wildcats enter their first season under the leadership of DeWitte Mandley. They tip-off the 2023-24 season on October 28 at Arkansas Baptist University.
