Women's Basketball locks down Dillard
NEW ORLEANS – The Wiley College women's basketball team held Dillard under 30 percent shooting in a 52-48 victory Sunday in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game at Dent Hall.
The Lady Wildcats (11-4, 2-2 GCAC) win their seventh game away from home. This is the second time this season in which they held their opponent under 50 points. The loss extended Dillard's losing streak to four as it fell to 2-7 on its home court.
Wiley College outshot the Bleu Devils 40 to 26.6 percent from the field. It didn't allow them to hit a 3-pointer in 13 attempts. The Lady Wildcats hit five triples on 15 attempts. They were plagued by turnovers – giving up 33 – which led to 27 points for Dillard.
Minnie Miller powered the Lady Wildcats in the first half as she scored 13 of her 15 points. She shot 6-for-8 from the field and hit one 3-pointer. She made four of her field goals in the second quarter – which helped Wiley College build a five-point first half lead.
In the second half, the Lady Wildcats would lead by as many as 13. A 3-pointer by Alaeh Pressley put the Lady Wildcats up by nine. Tamia Dolls stole the ball and dished to Diamond Hawthorne, who laid it in – giving them an eleven-point lead. Wiley College was held scoreless for the last two minutes of the third quarter which allowed the Bleu Devils to pull within five.
The Lady Wildcats only made two of 10 field goal attempts in the fourth quarter. They also turned it over eight times. Dillard tied the game at 47 with three minutes left. Alaeh Pressley rebounded her own miss and set up Hawthorne, who was fouled. She sank both free throws to put the Lady Wildcats back on top with 2:49 left. The Bleu Devils turned it over and Dolls found Davis for a layup to extend the lead to four.
Hawthorne followed Miller with 14 points, five rebounds and three steals. Pressley led the team with seven rebounds. Dolls notched three assists to lead the squad.
Wiley College will return to New Orleans this week for its second GCAC Pod at Southern University of New Orleans.
