Women's Basketball overwhelms Oakwood

NEW ORLEANS – The Wiley College women's basketball team pulled away late in the first quarter and didn't look back to lock up its first Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory, 89-69 over Oakwood University Friday at Dillard University's Dent Hall.

The victory is the fifth that the Lady Wildcats have won by 15 or more points and the second time it defeated an opponent by 20 or more. They improve to 6-3 away from Alumni Gymnasium.

Oakwood (3-11, 1-1 GCAC) jumped out to an early lead but two 3-pointers by Kaitlyn Davis put Wiley College in front. The Ambassadors tied the game with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. A layup by Ashunti Cooper sparked a 10-2 run. Kayja Jackson hit three shots to give the Lady Wildcats a 19-11 first-quarter lead.

The Ambassadors pulled within six early in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Tamia Dolls and a second-chance bucket by Diamond Hawthorne increased the lead to double-digits. An offensive putback by Jackson grew the lead to 20.

The Lady Wildcats (10-3, 1-1 GCAC) led by as many as 29 points in the second half. They outshot Oakwood 34.5 to 31.9 percent. Wiley College hit nine 3-pointers – which is the most since February 27, 2020. The Ambassadors only hit three of their 21 attempts. The Lady Wildcats held the lead for over 35 minutes – marking the fifth game which it lead over 30 minutes.

For the second consecutive game, Wiley College surpassed 60 rebounds with 64, including 29 on the offensive glass. The Lady Wildcats tallied 25 points on second-chance opportunities. They scored 36 points off of 41 turnovers by the Ambassadors. The game was very physical with 43 fouls called – including four technicals with three by called on Oakwood.

Jackson put up 21 points – surpassing 20 for the second time this season. Her 12 rebounds notched her fourth career double-double. She also contributed four steals and two blocks. Davis and Alaeh Pressley followed with 14 points each. Jay'lann Myles and Diamond Hawthorne also tallied double-digits with 10 points apiece. Dolls posted a team-high three assists.

Wiley College will face No. 25 Rust College at noon tomorrow. The Lady Bearcats defeated the host Dillard 64-58.
