Goldsby wins Individual HBCUAC Title, Men's Cross Country finishes runner-up

DANVILLE, Ala. - After narrowly falling short of the 2023 individual title, Wiley University men's cross country runner Javoun Goldsby turned the tables at the 2024 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Cross Country Championship, coming out on top in a tight race. Still, the Wildcats came up short of the team title, finishing as runner-up for the second straight season on Friday at the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center Course.

Goldsby finished the eight-kilometer course with a personal best of 29:09.70 - five seconds faster than his previous best at the 2023 conference championship. He edged out Tougaloo College's JaDarrius Nelson by 0.6 seconds. The victory caps off an honor-filled season as Goldsby won six of the eight HBCUAC Runner of the Week awards. He is the third Wildcat to win an individual conference title, joining Patrick Mutai (2015) and Laban Kandie (2016). Goldsby was one of four individual qualifiers for the 2024 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Cross Country National Championship at Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo. on November 22.

Wiley had two more All-HBCUAC finishers. Jaylon Donson finished seventh at 30:50.50 - marking the second consecutive season he earned All-Conference. Ameariun Harper finished 10th (31:38.8) for his first selection. Channing Arvie ran a personal best of 34:19.30 and Jaden Cole finished at 34:45.50 to round out Wiley's 65 points.

Tougaloo College had all five runners finish in the top 15 to claim the team title with 44 points, the first in their program's history.

"When I came to Wiley, I told Javoun, 'I was going to make sure he won the title,'" head coach Christopher McConnell said. "I'm very proud of him. He's worked hard all season and it paid off. Jaylon and Ameariun ran well and did what we needed them to. We fell short. Hats off to Tougaloo, they pushed harder."

Joseph Levier III, an All-Conference runner in 2022, will graduate in December. Goldsby will look to defend his title next year and All-HBCUAC runners Donson and Harper are expected to return. McConnell will look to add recruits and transfers to help the team make a run for the 2025 title.
