Men's Cross Country eye 2024 HBCUAC Title
The Wiley University men's cross country team heads to Danville, Alabama, looking to bring home the title when it competes at the 2024 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Cross Country Championship hosted by Decatur Morgan County Tourism at 10 a.m. Friday at the Oakville Indian Mounds Education Center Course.
The eight-kilometer race will be streamed on HBCU-Plus, which can be viewed online. Users can also download the free app on their mobile devices or Smart TVs. Live results will also be available.
The Wildcats prepared for the championship with five meets, mostly competing against National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) schools. They ran on a variety of courses. Javoun Goldsby, a two-time All-Conference athlete, was named 2024 Preseason HBCUAC Runner of the Year. He's lived up to that billing with five HBCUAC Runner of the Week awards. He ran a season-best 29:23.3 at Dallas Baptist University's Old Glory Gallop on October 5.
Jaylon Donson, an All-Conference athlete, has consistently held the second-best time on the team. His season-best of 31:47.6 came at the Old Glory Gallop. Joseph Levier III, an All-Conference athlete in 2022 and redshirted last season, ran his best time of the year at Ouachita Baptist University's Tiger Invitational at 32:04.7.
Jaden Cole is in his first season, he ran 33:49.5 at the Old Glory Gallop, over three minutes faster than his first eight-kilometer race on September 14 in the Southwestern University Showdown. Channing Arvie, who didn't run in 2023, returned and ran a personal best of 34:54.1 at the Old Glory Gallop.
The Wildcats, who finished runner-up the last two seasons, seek their first title since winning the Red River Athletic Conference in 2014. This will be their third appearance in the HBCUAC Championship, previously known as the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
