Goldsby earns HBCUAC Preseason Runner of the Year, Men's Cross Country rank second in poll
After finishing runner-up by 0.1 second in the 2023 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship, Wiley University men's cross country athlete Javoun Goldsby is the favorite to win the individual title as the conference head cross country coaches selected him as the 2024 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Preseason Runner of the Year, the conference announced Friday.
Goldsby, who led the Wildcats all season, received 26 points and two first-place votes. He ran a personal best 29:14.5 at the GCAC Championship - helping Wiley finish as runner-up for the second consecutive season. Goldsby also earned two GCAC Runner of the Week awards.
The HBCUAC also released the Preseason Team Rankings. The Wildcats finished second behind the two-time defending conference champion Philander Smith University. They scored 72 points and a first-place vote. Wiley returns most of its team from last season, including All-GCAC athlete Jaylon Donson, Ameariun Harper and Joseph Levier III, who earned All-GCAC in 2022. Jaden Cole, who had All-GCAC finishes in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs joins the team. Channing Arvie, who ran in 2022, also rejoins the team.
Wiley enters its first season under head coach Christopher McConnell, who produced three All-GCAC athletes at Talladega College last fall, leading the women to a runner-up finish. He led Philander Smith University men to GCAC championships in 2020 and 2022.
The Wildcats will open the season at Texas Christian University's John MacKenzie Invitational at AP Ranch in Ft. Worth, Texas. The five-kilometer race will begin at 8:15 a.m. A live results link is listed in the men's cross country schedule. This will be the first time Wiley has run at a meet hosted by TCU.
