Men's Track and Field wins Three Events, takes third at GCAC Championship

SHREVEPORT, La. - The Wiley University men's track and field team finished on top of the podium in three events en route to a third-place finish at the 2024 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Track and Field Championship Friday and Saturday at Lee Hedges Stadium.

The Wildcats tallied 152 points, finishing eight points behind the runner-up Talladega College. Dillard University won its fourth consecutive title with 237 points. The championship was called with two events remaining due to a second incident of lightning in the area. The first incident caused a two-hour delay after the 100-meter dash. The events not completed were the 5,000-meter run and the 4 x 400-meter relay.

The 4 x 800-meter relay team of Jaden Cole, Jaylon Donson, Christian Lacy and Javoun Goldsby picked up Wiley's first event win on Friday. It completed the race in 8:11.51. Xavier Hutchinson defended his title in the javelin as he threw for 43.53 meters. He also placed in the triple jump and shot put. Isaac Jenkins won the high jump with a leap of 1.88 meters. He led all athletes in field events with 24 points. Jenkins finished runner-up in the long jump and third place in the triple jump.

The Wildcats had several athletes earn All-GCAC by finishing in the top three of their respective events. Ronald Garrett finished runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal best of 14.37 seconds. He also took second in the 400-meter hurdles. Goldsby finished second in the 1,500-meter run (4:21.41). Cole had a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run (2:11.84) and placed third in the 1,500-meter run (4:25.24).

Wiley will look to add more national championship qualifiers when it competes in the Last Chance Meet hosted by Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, on May 9.
