Lopez looks forward to First Season with Wiley University Soccer

This fall, Laura Lopez begins her first season as Wiley University assistant men's and women's soccer coach, hoping to make the most of the opportunity.

Joining the Wildcat coaching staff in February, Lopez brings a wealth of experience, most recently coaching at Challenger Sports in Colorado Springs in 2023.

"Wiley University is a place that provides multiple opportunities for its students, equipping them with tools for a better future in both sports and academics," Lopez said. "I'm excited to be here and look forward to working with Coach Andrew Benitez on continuing to build the soccer programs."

Lopez also coached the under-10 and under-8 girls teams at Southampton Town United School in New York in 2021. She had a successful college playing career at Jacksonville College and Ohio Valley University. Lopez was a National Junior College All-Region XIV Second Team Selection at Jacksonville College. She helped Ohio Valley win two Great Midwest Conference titles and earned All-Conference in 2018. From 2009-2012, Lopez played for Team Bogota. She helped them to four National Difutbol Tournament championships and a third-place finish in the 2012 National Games.

Benitez met Lopez when they competed at Ohio Valley. He knew instantly she would be the perfect addition to his staff.

"She was a great player and knows how to win," Benitez said. "She's very knowledgeable and knows what to tell players to get them to perform the way I want. Lopez will be a great addition to our program."

Since joining Benitez's staff, she has been preparing athletes for the 2025 season, which will mark the program's first in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference after competing in the Continental Athletic Conference the previous two seasons. From 2012 to 2018, the programs contended for championships in the Red River Athletic Conference. Lopez hopes to help the programs return to that level and beyond.

"Coach Benitez has built quality programs," Lopez said. "I'm looking forward to partnering with him to take them to new heights."
