The Wiley University men's soccer team put up 13 shots with four on goal but did not find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to Nelson University in the season opener Thursday at Pemberton Field.
Seven freshmen made their debut. Jayce Graves led the team with five shots. Luis Hernandez and junior Habimana Janvier each put two shots on goal. Melvin Bonilla stopped eight shots.
Both teams controlled the ball equally in the first half. A foul by the Wildcats in the 32nd minute set up a penalty shot, which the Lions took advantage of. In the 44th minute, they allowed the Lions to get past them for a second goal. Wiley was outshot 19-13 and 10-4 in shots on goal. Nelson held the edge 5-4 in corner kicks.
The match was very physical with a total of 21 fouls called and 13 cards issued, including three reds. It was called in the 85th minute.
Wiley will hit the road and visit North American University at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
