Men's Basketball prepares for Regular Season Finale against Virgin Islands
In a crucial showdown for the Wiley University men's basketball team, it is set to face the University of the Virgin Islands in the regular season finale at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the UVI Sports Fitness Center.
The game will be streamed on the Wiley University Channel on the Urban Edge Network. Fans can download the app to their favorite streaming devices. Live statistics will also be available. The link is listed in the men's basketball schedule on wileyathletics.com.
The Wildcats (9-12, 7-9), currently ranked eighth in the HBCUAC standings, are aiming to finish the season strong ahead of the 2025 Hope Credit Union HBCUAC Championship next week in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Wiley defeated the Buccaneers 76-71 at Alumni Gymnasium on January 18. Head coach Joseph Flegler praised the team's past performance but emphasized the importance of this upcoming game.
"The victory in January was crucial, but finishing strong in the regular season finale holds even more significance,' Flegler remarked.
Wiley split its games last week. Jalen Bates led the team with 19 points, five assists and four steals in a 65-61 victory over Southern University at New Orleans on February 13. Demarius Pitts scored 14 points, hitting crucial shots which helped Wiley attempt to rally in the second half against Dillard on Saturday.
The Buccaneers (7-13, 5-10 HBCUAC), led by coach Kevin Sheppard, are in 10th in the HBCUAC standings. They present a formidable challenge with standout players like Amayoa'ah Phillips, who is tied for the conference lead averaging 23.1 points per game, and Jalil Langston, who adds an average of 13.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Virgin Islands hasn't played since beating Philander Smith 72-69 at home on February 4.
