Men's Basketball falls short at Dillard
In a closely contested HBCUAC basketball encounter, the Wiley University men's basketball team rallied in the second half but fell short in a 62-55 loss against Dillard University in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference game Saturday at Dent Hall.
Wiley drops the season series to the Bleu Devils and fall to 2-6 in road games.
The Wildcats (9-12, 7-9 HBCUAC), led in scoring by Demarius Pitts with 14 points, initially struggled to establish a rhythm but found their footing as the game progressed. Shamir Mosley and Taj Toney also delivered strong performances, scoring 12 and 10 points respectively. Defensively, Wiley saw significant contributions from Cortez Collins, who not only scored 10 points but also secured 8 crucial rebounds.
The first period saw Dillard set the tempo, gaining a 24-17 lead by halftime. Despite an admirable comeback attempt in the second half, where Wiley managed to close the gap to just three points, the Wildcats couldn't overcome the deficit. Key moments came from Pitts and Mosley, who each sunk critical 3-pointers to keep the game within reach.
"We had our moments, especially in the second half where we really tried to turn things around," said Pitts, reflecting on the narrowed lead. This drive demonstrated Wiley's resilience and skill but ultimately was not enough to secure a victory.
The Wildcats will close the regular season at the University of the Virgin Islands. The Buccaneers haven't played since February 4 when they defeated Philander Smith University. Wiley pulled out a 76-71 victory over UVI at home.
