Men's Basketball tips off HBCUAC play against SUNO, Dillard

The Wiley University men's basketball team begins their 17-game Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference schedule against Southern University at New Orleans on Thursday and Dillard University on Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

Thursday's game tips at 7 p.m. and Saturday's at 3 p.m. Both contests will stream on HBCU-Plus, a free streaming app that can be viewed online or the app can be downloaded on mobile devices or Smart TVs. Live statistics will also be available. The links will be listed in the men's basketball schedule on wileyathletics.com.

The Wildcats (2-2) are coming off their first victories. Tayvion Fisher recorded his third 20-plus scoring game of the season with 22 in a 73-58 win over Huston-Tillotson University on November 8. Demarius Pitts followed with 21. Devon Barshow led the team with 27 points in a 63-60 decision over Jarvis Christian University on November 9. Tre Booker tallied 14. Jalen Bates averaged seven rebounds, five assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Southern University at New Orleans (1-5) is on a four-game losing streak with all of them being by double-digits. Jamal Gibson, the 2024 Preseason HBCUAC Player of the Year has picked up where he left off, averaging 18.2 points and 13.5 rebounds per game. Transfers Tony White and Tyon Thompson are also impacting the Knights. White is averaging 12 points and 2.8 steals per game. Thompson is putting up 10.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Dillard (3-1) is coming off their first loss against Howard University after opening with three victories. Bentravin Phillips leads the Bleu Devils with 17.8 points per game. He is one of five averaging double figures. Ben Fort leads the team with 6.3 rebounds per game. Armond Williams follows with 5.8 rebounds per game while averaging 12.3 points per game. Justin Warren leads the team with 4.5 assists per game.

The Wildcats lead the series 10-6 against the Knights, winning seven of the last nine meetings. The schools split last season's meetings with each team victorious on the road. Wiley is 9-7 against Dillard with its earliest recorded meeting during the 1967-68 season. The Wildcats won both matchups last season.
