Men's Basketball wraps homestand against Philander Smith

The Wiley University men's basketball team will conclude its first homestand in 2024 against Philander Smith University at 5 p.m. Saturday in Alumni Gymnasium.

The game will broadcast on the Wiley University channel on HBCU+. The application is available to download on your phone, tablet or Smart TV.

The Wildcats (7-8, 3-4 GCAC) split their games last week with a 78-72 victory over Rust College on January 4 and a 68-50 loss against Tougaloo College on Saturday. Delor Johnson averaged 20.5 points per game and continues to lead the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with 22.2 points per game. Demarius Pitts averaged 14 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He recorded his first double-double of the season against Rust on January 4. Wiley ranks third in the conference with 11.4 offensive rebounds per game.

Philander Smith (10-5, 6-1 GCAC) is second in the GCAC and is on a six-game winning streak. Christione Rufus won GCAC Player of the Week after averaging 21 points, five rebounds and four assists per game. He is one of three Panthers averaging double-digit scoring with 10 points per game. Raymond Reece leads the team with 17 points per game and Derrick Woods follows with 10.5. Reece ranks second in the conference with 11.3 rebounds per game and leads with a 68.4 field goal percentage. David Kellah is second in the GCAC with a 43.2 three-point field goal shooting percentage.

The Panthers lead the GCAC with 77.1 points per game. They also lead with 17 free throws made and 24.3 free throw attempts per game. Philander Smith is second in field goals made per game (27.5), free throw percentage (70.1), offensive rebounds per game (12.1), defensive rebounds per game (27.7) and total rebounds per game (39.8).

The Wildcats and Panthers have met since 1966. Wiley leads the series 20-8. It split its games with Philander Smith last season, with each team winning on its home floor.
