The Wiley University men's basketball team overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half but were unable to keep the lead in an 88-82 loss to Louisiana Christian in its 2023 Homecoming Game Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Wildcats (1-2) were outshot 50 to 41.4 percent. Both teams grabbed 38 rebounds. They won the turnover battle 14-13 but were outscored 16-11 in points off turnovers and 15-8 in second chance points. Louisiana Christian had more production from its reserves outscoring Wiley 27-9.

Both teams held leads in the first half. Louisiana Christian led by as many as four. Delor Johnson hit two 3-pointers to the tie the game at 16. Tre Booker put Wiley University ahead 22-19 with a 3-pointer with 9:32 left in the first half. A second-chance putback from Chukwuemeke Nwaoshai increased the lead to five. Four missed shots and two turnovers allowed Louisiana Christian to take a one-point lead. Baskets by Nwaoshai and Booker put Wiley University back up by four.

The Wildcats didn't score for five minutes. Louisiana Christian hit five shots and took a 46-35 lead. Wiley University trailed by as many as 16. Trailing 69-59 with 8:23 left, Shamir Mosley made a layup and was fouled. Two shots made by Demarius Pitts cut the margin to one with six minutes left. Mosley gave the Wiley University the lead with a 3-pointer.

The lead didn't last. Two missed shots allowed Louisiana Christian to retake the lead. A jumper by Johnson pulled Wiley University within two. Louisiana Christian pushed its lead up to eight.

Johnson led all scorers with 28 points, hitting 10 shots and four 3-pointers. He added four rebounds and four assists. Mosley and Booker followed with 13 points. Pitts finished in double figures with 12. Nwaoshai led the team with 12 rebounds.

Wiley University will continue its homestand on Tuesday against Texas College. The Steers split games in the Austin Area Urban League HBCU Classic with a 70-60 victory over Dillard on Thursday and a 73-65 loss on Friday.
