CEDAR PARK, Texas – Wiley College men's basketball player Delor Johnson scored 36 points to help the Wildcats rally from a second-half deficit to defeat Jarvis Christian University 78-73 Thursday in the 2023 Austin Area Urban League HBCU Classic at the H-E-B Center.

The victory was the Wildcats' first over its Highway 80 rival since 2020. Johnson shot 14-for-19 from the field, including one 3-pointer. He added seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal. Demarius Pitts followed with 22 points – hitting nine of 17 shot attempts. He contributed four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jalen Bates led the team with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals off the bench. Chukwuemeke Nwaoshai also grabbed eight rebounds.

The Wildcats (1-1) outshot the Bulldogs 52.5 percent to 41 percent. Jarvis Christian held the edge from 3-point territory – connecting on eight of 26 attempts while Wiley College only hit four of 17. It outrebounded Jarvis Christian 37-34. The Wildcats lost the turnover battle 15-14 but outscored the Bulldogs 18-11 in points off turnovers.

With 4:03 left in the game, Wiley College trailed 71-62. Bates rebounded a missed shot by James Russell and passed to Johnson, who lobbed it to Pitts for a slam dunk. Johnson hit a layup, then got a steal and made another layup to pull the Wildcats within one with 2:07 remaining. With 1:54 left, Johnson gave the Wildcats a lead with a jumper. The Bulldogs immediately retook the lead with a layup by Russell.

Jarvis Christian (0-1) got a steal but missed the layup. Tre Booker got the rebound and dished to Johnson, who put the Wildcats back in front with a layup. Jarvis Christian missed two shots and turned it over twice. The Wildcats made four free throws to seal the game.

Wiley College will return home for its 2023 Homecoming game against Louisiana Christian University on Saturday.
