
Men's Basketball edges Dillard
NEW ORLEANS – Wiley College men's basketball players Maurice Harvey and Antonio Jones recorded double-doubles and Deonte Spencer made two clutch 3-pointers to lead the Wildcats to a 76-72 victory over Dillard University Sunday in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game at Dent Hall.
The Wildcats (7-7, 2-2 GCAC) snapped a nine-game winning streak by the Bleu Devils for their fourth win away from Alumni Gymnasium. It was also the second time they overcame a halftime deficit.
For the second time in three games, Harvey surpassed 20 points for the second time in three games with a career-high 25. His 13 rebounds were also a career best which went along with five assists. Jones tallied 15 points and 10 assists. He also contributed six rebounds. Spencer hit three 3-pointers with two in the second half. His third triple gave Wiley College the lead for good with 4:56 left in the game.
Wiley College trailed 59-53 with 12:11 left in the game. It held Dillard scoreless for nearly four minutes, as the Bleu Devils missed five shots. Justin Minter converted two free throws. Shamir Mosley made a layup. Minter put the Wildcats in front with a 3-pointer.
Dillard (10-2, 2-1 GCAC) tied the game at 63 with 7:32 remaining. Spencer's first 3-pointer of the second half put Wiley College in front. Three misses by the Wildcats allowed Dillard to regain the lead with 5:15 left.
Jones set up Spencer's go-ahead 3-pointer. Wiley College made two defensive stops. Layups by Harvey and Jones expanded the lead to six. The Bleu Devils cut the deficit to one on a 3-pointer by Dwight Felton. Raheem Carter stole the ball and slammed it with 1:15 left. A turnover and foul by the Wildcats gave the Bleu Devils an opportunity to take back the lead but missed both attempts.
With a minute left the Bleu Devils had another opportunity to tie or take the lead but turned it over. Harvey rebounded a missed 3-point attempt and was fouled. He sank both free throws to put Wiley College up by four with seconds remaining.
The Wildcats will return to New Orleans next week for their second GCAC pod at Southern University of New Orleans. They will rematch against Rust College on Friday, play Fisk University on Saturday and the host SUNO on Sunday.
