Baseball topples SUNO in Series Finale
The defending regular season conference champion Wiley University baseball team took the lead in the third inning and received a masterful performance from Keyon Guillory in an 11-1 run-rule victory over Southern University at New Orleans in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference game Sunday at Coker Field.
The win gives the Wildcats their sixth conference series sweep and extends their winning streak to nine games. They finished 18-4 in home games, most at Coker Field, where the Wildcats played for the first time since 2020. Wiley enters the final week of the regular season within a game of HBCUAC leader Talladega College.
Guillory threw his fifth complete game and picked his eighth win. He held the Knights to a run on two hits and struck out a career-high 14 batters, tied for the most in program history since 2007. Guillory didn't allow a hit through the first five innings. He lowered his conference-leading earned run average to 2.55.
Eddie Garza reached on an error in the third inning. A second miscue advanced him to third. He scored on an attempted double steal. Ivan Del Villar was hit by a pitch in the fourth. He stole second and scored on a two-out double by Jaziel Martinez. Amir Mason hit an RBI double in the fifth, stole third and scored on a throwing error - increasing the lead to four.
Kerrigan Edmondson broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff home run in the sixth inning. The Wildcats answered as Jhan Carlos Javier led off with a double. He stole third and home, just beating the tag. Kai Woodard walked and scored on an error. Julian Rosales and Laker McPherson got RBI singles in the seventh. Del Villar brought home a run in the eighth. Woodard ended the game with a base hit off the left field wall, which scored Jacob Perez and Del Villar.
Mason went 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Perez recorded two hits and scored a run. Del Villar went 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI.
The Wildcats (31-13, 22-4) play an exhibition game at NCAA Division I school Texas Southern University on Tuesday. It will conclude the regular season with a three-game series at Dillard University on Friday and Saturday.
