HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The defending regular season conference champion Wiley University baseball team took the lead in the first and shut down Oakwood University in a 7-0 victory in the finale of a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) series Saturday at John Hunt Park.
The Wildcats (25-13, 17-4 HBCUAC) sweep their fourth HBCUAC series and move into second place in the conference standings with a half-game lead over Southern University at New Orleans. It's the third time they've shut out their opponent.
Wiley's first four batters reached. Ajari Camp led off with a single and scored on a triple by Amir Mason. Ryan Ready hit a run batted-in single to score Mason. Jhan Carlos Javier hit an RBI triple and scored on a throwing error to give the Wildcats a 5-0 lead. Camp led off the second by reaching on an error. He stole second and Jacob Perez brought him home with a double. Ready hit his second RBI base hit.
Keyon Guillory was unhittable. He only allowed three runners to reach base with two on walks and one on an error. He struck out eight batters, including striking out the side in the third inning. He retired 12 straight batters.
With the threat of a storm and needing to play at least five innings for the game to count, Wiley bunted during their at-bats in the last three innings to speed up the game. The game was called after the fifth when lightning was in the area.
The Wildcats will visit Grambling State University for an exhibition game at 2 p.m. Tuesday. They will resume HBCUAC play against Tougaloo College at Coker Field on April 12 and 13.
