Baseball completes sweep over Wilberforce in slugfest
CINCINNATI - Wiley University second baseman Armand Daigre hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, which gave the Wildcats the lead for good as they rallied from a three-run deficit in an 11-9 victory over Wilberforce University Saturday at Gendell Family Field.
Wiley (22-12, 14-4 HBCUAC) sweeps its third Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference series and ties Southern University at New Orleans for second in the standings. It improves to 10-8 in road games.
The Wildcats trailed 8-5 after the fifth inning. It gave up a single and a home run with two outs. Ivan Del Villar led off the sixth with a bunt single and took second on an error. Jhan Carlos Javier followed with a walk. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Anthony Castaneda. Jesse Jones brought home Del Villar with a ground ball to third. Javier cut the lead to one with a steal of home. Abel Rodriguez Jr. walked, Eddie Garza singled to center. An error allowed Rodriguez to score the tying run. Garza scored on Daigre's blast over the left field wall.
Javier went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in the second inning and an RBI single in the ninth. He scored three runs. Garza recorded two hits, including a two-RBI double in the second. Along with his go-ahead home run, Daigre doubled in the fifth inning. Jacob Perez and Del Villar had two hits.
Nick Rodriguez picked up his sixth victory, throwing 7 1/3 innings in relief. He struck out seven batters. Del Villar, who usually starts at first base, started on the mound and went 1 1/3 innings in his first appearance since the 2024 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship game on April 28. Ethan Jones got the final out, earning his first save.
Wiley continues its road trip on Tuesday at Texas A&M University-Texarkana. The Eagles beat the Wildcats 12-6 at Coker Field on February 26.
