Baseball travels to Wilberforce University

The defending regular season conference champion Wiley University baseball team continues its road swing at Wilberforce University for a three-game Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference series on Friday and Saturday.

The series opens with a doubleheader starting at noon Central Standard Time on Friday and wraps with a noon finale on Saturday. No information on live coverage is posted as of press time.

The Wildcats (19-12, 11-4 HBCUAC) took two out of three games against Voorhees University last week. They sit in third but are tied with Southern University at New Orleans for the second-fewest losses. The Knights swept Rust College in a three-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday. Though Wiley won the series, it was held to 15 runs and hit .220, its lowest in a conference series.

Ivan Del Villar hit .333 and drove in four runs. Amir Mason recorded three hits, three runs batted in and scored twice. Ryan Ready tallied three hits and brought home two runs. Keyon Guillory delivered a quality start, holding the Tigers to one run on three hits in 7 1/3 innings. He dropped his earned-run average to 2.72 and leads the HBCUAC. Jalen Porter earned his third victory, escaping a bases-loaded situation in the eighth. He threw 2 2/3 scoreless innings and struck out five. Isaac Burciaga picked up his fourth victory.

Wilberforce (5-21, 3-12 HBCUAC) split a non-conference doubleheader against Alice Lloyd College. It was swept by Rust College in its last HBCUAC series. The Bulldogs are in ninth and trail Tougaloo College by a half-game. Beau Spears leads the team with a .361 batting average and 34 runs. Christopher Diaz-Alcantra and Julien Patton lead the Bulldogs with 22 RBI. Xavier Jeffrey Thompson leads the pitching staff with a 5.63 ERA. He is 2-3 and struck out 21 batters in 32 innings.

This weekend is the first meeting between the Wildcats and Bulldogs. Wilberforce joined the HBCUAC in July after competing as an independent in the Continental Athletic Conference last season.
