Baseball edges Voorhees in Extra Innings
DENMARK, S.C. - The defending regular season conference champion Wiley University baseball team only put up four hits, but it was all it needed to defeat Voorhees University 3-1 in 10 innings on Friday.
The Wildcats (18-11, 10-3 HBCUAC) improved to 6-7 on the road. It takes the series opener in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference series for the third time this season. It's their third extra-inning victory.
Wiley had limited hitting opportunities, largely due to Voorhees' pitchers' struggles to throw strikes. It benefited from 14 walks and two hit batters. The Wildcats had runners in scoring position in the second through the seventh innings but could not get timely hits. They fell behind in the second on a pair of walks, a double steal of second and home.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Smauri Abram, Kai Woodard and Anthony Castaneda walked to load the bases. Abel Rodriguez Jr. Hit a fly ball to right field, deep enough for Abram to score the tying run. Eddie Garza singled to load the bases, but the inning ended with a flyout.
Wiley found themselves in a tight situation in the bottom half of the inning with the bases loaded and one out. Jalen Porter, who came in for Keyon Guillory struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied. He retired the Tigers in order in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
Abram led off the 10th with a walk. Castaneda was hit by a pitch and a single by Rodriguez loaded the bases. A passed ball brought Abram home for the go-ahead run. Jacob Perez drew a bases-loaded walk to add another. Porter shut the Tigers down to seal the win, earning his third of the season. He only allowed one walk and struck out five batters. Guillory went 7 1/3 innings, holding the Tigers to a run on three hits and struck out four.
The series will conclude with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. tomorrow.
