Baseball out-slugs Talladega College in Series Finale
The defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Wiley University baseball team hit five home runs as it claimed the finale 16-6 over the defending GCAC Tournament champion Talladega College in a Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference game Saturday at Coker Field.
The Wildcats (17-11, 9-3 HBCUAC) snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 12-4 in home contests. They recorded their ninth victory by double digits.
Wiley jumped to a 7-0 lead after three innings. Armand Daigre drove in three runs with a double and a sacrifice fly. Julian Rosales hit a run-batted-in double. Anthony Castaneda brought in a run with a single and Abel Rodriguez Jr. hit a sacrifice fly.
Talladega (20-8, 14-1 HBCUAC) scored a run on two hits in the fourth. Kai Woodard answered, drilling his second home run of the season over the wall in right-center field. The Tornadoes scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but the Wildcats responded. Anthony Castaneda hit his second home run in the fifth. Smauri Abram pushed the lead to nine with a three-run home run in the sixth. Jhan Carlos Javier hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning for his fourth of the season.
Abram sealed the game with his fifth home run of the season in the eighth inning. He went 2-for-3, scoring four runs and driving in four with his two home runs. Castaneda went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Ivan Del Villar went 3-for-4 with a double and scored three runs. Rosales recorded two hits, two runs and two RBI. Daigre drove in three runs.
Nick Rodriguez picked up his fifth win. He held the high-powered Tornadoes scoreless in the first three innings. He gave up six runs on 11 hits but struck out five in 6 1/3 innings. Keyon Guillory threw the final 1 2/3 innings.
The Wildcats will begin an 11-game road trip with a three-game HBCUAC series at Voorhees University from March 21-22. The Tigers were idle this weekend. They swept Philander Smith University on March 7 and 8.
