Baseball takes on Talladega College for First in the HBCUAC

The defending Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Wiley University baseball team hosts the defending tournament champion Talladega College in a three-game series with first place in the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference on the line Friday and Saturday at Coker Field.

Friday and Saturday's first pitch is at noon. Live statistics are available for all three games. The links are listed in the baseball schedule on wileyathletics.com.

The Wildcats (16-9, 8-1 HBCUAC) are coming off a sweep over Rust College last weekend and a 13-7 non-conference loss at Louisiana Christian University on Tuesday. Ivan Del Villar hit a grand slam and solo home run in the first game on March 7. He also hit a three-run double in the second game, which started on March 8 but finished on March 9. Del Villar finished the week with 10 runs batted in. Amir Mason returned to the lineup and hit 5-for-12 with five runs and two RBI. Smauri Abram recorded five hits and scored three runs.

Keyon Guillory picked up his fourth victory after a six-strikeout performance in five innings. Nick Rodriguez earned his fourth victory, striking out four in five innings. Ethan Jones picked up his first win, with three scoreless innings in the second game against Rust.

The Tornadoes (18-7, 12-0 HBCUAC) have breezed through conference play with their closest game decided by six runs. They are receiving votes in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Top 25 poll. Miguel Oropeza, the reigning Player of the Year, has continued where he left off, leading the conference with a .508 batting average and 33 runs. He is second with four home runs and eighth with 18 RBI. Armando Jackson leads the Tornadoes with 20 RBI. Emilio Duque leads the conference with a 2.66 earned-run average and is 4-1. Samuel Guadamuz is 5-1 with a 4.20 ERA and ranks sixth in the HBCUAC with 29 strikeouts.

The Wildcats and Tornadoes met five times last season. Wiley won the first game 10-7 but has lost the four most recent meetings, including last season's GCAC Championship and the Black College World Series.
