Baseball edges Texas College, completes sweep

TATUM, Texas - Defending conference champion Wiley University baseball player Brendan Mendoza hit a two-RBI double in the seventh to give the Wildcats the lead in a 5-3 victory over Texas College Sunday at Tatum Eagles Nest.

The Wildcats (3-3) extend their winning streak to three games and complete their first sweep. They entered the seventh inning tied at one. Jhan Carlos Javier led off with a double. Ajari Camp pinch-ran and advanced to third on Adrian Cindo's sacrifice bunt. Anthony Castaneda pinch-hit and drew a walk. Deekota Johnson pinch-ran and stole second base, which set up Mendoza's go-ahead double.

With one out in the eighth, Amir Mason was hit by a pitch. Ryan Ready followed with a double. Javier brought both runners in with a single to left. He went 3-for-4. Mendoza followed with two hits. The Wildcats outhit Texas College 10-5.

Nick Rodriguez made his second start and went eight innings. He held the Steers to one run on two hits and struck out eight batters for his first win of the season. Rodriguez didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. He only allowed two runners to reach base in his final three innings.

Wiley broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. With two outs, Adrian Cindo hit a triple to right-center field. Texas College second baseman Julian Lopez attempted to throw him out at third but threw the ball into the Wiley dugout, which allowed Cindo to score. The lead held until the fifth, when Texas College tied it with two hits.

The Wildcats will head to Nelson University, formerly Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Tuesday. The Lions won three of four games against Avila University.
