TATUM, Texas - The defending regular season conference champion Wiley University baseball team scored early and often in 9-1 and 13-0 victories over Texas College Saturday at Tatum Eagles Field in Eagle Nest Park.
The Wildcats (2-3) halt their season-opening losing streak at three games. They pick up their seventh and eighth consecutive victories over the Steers.
In the first game, Ryan Ready went 2-for-3 with a run and four runs batted in. He hit a two-run double in the third, a RBI single in the fourth and a sacrifice fly in the sixth. Amir Mason reached base four times, including two hits and scored three runs. Jhan Carlos Javier and Abel Rodriguez Jr. got hits and scored a run.
With one out in the first, Mason singled to left and advanced to second when Ready reached on an error. An errant pick-off throw that went into right field brought home Mason. Rodriguez led off the third with a bunt single. Jacob Perez moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Mason walked, which set up Ready's double. A throwing error scored Ready. Ivan Del Villar, who reached on the error, stole third and scored on an error by the shortstop to increase the lead to five. Texas College committed four errors.
Wiley added a run in the fourth when Rodriguez led off by being hit by a pitch. He stole second and came around to score on Ready's single. Javier led off the fifth with a double and later scored when the right fielder dropped the ball. Jacob Perez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. The Wildcats outhit Texas College 7-5 and benefited from six walks and two hit batters.
Keyon Guillory, the reigning Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and Preseason All-Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) First Team selection, made his first start of the season. He held the Steers to an unearned run on five hits and struck out 10 in seven innings, picking up his first win. Guillory only needed 77 pitches to complete the game.
In Game 2, the Wildcats outhit the Steers 15-5. Seven of Wiley's nine starters recorded hits. Adrian Cindo, who started at shortstop, went 3-for-4 and brought home three runs with singles in the first and third innings and a double in the fifth. Ivan Del Villar went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run and scored three runs. Smauri Abram went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, two runs and two RBI. Ready went 2-for-3 with a RBI double and two runs.
Wiley took control in the first inning with three runs. Its first three batters reached base. A passed ball brought home Jacob Perez. Javier drove in Armand Daigre with a sacrifice fly. Cindo's first RBI hit increased the lead to three. With two outs in the third, Del Villar and Javier were hit by pitches. Cindo's single to left scored Del Villar. Abram increased the lead to five with his first home run. Perez and Del Villar homered to power a six-run sixth inning.
Isaac Burciaga picked up his first win in his second start. He held the Steers to five hits and struck out seven to earn the shutout. Texas College only had one runner reach second.
The Wildcats will wrap the series at noon at Eagles Nest Park.
