
Guillory, Ready earn Superlatives; Seven land on All-GCAC Teams
Wiley University baseball players Keyon Guillory and Ryan Ready were recognized among the best in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Guillory earned GCAC Pitcher of the Year, Freshman of the Year and All-GCAC First Team Pitcher. Ready won GCAC Newcomer of the Year and All-GCAC Second Team Third Baseman on Thursday.
The awards were presented between games of the 2024 Hope Credit Union GCAC Baseball Championship. The head coaches nominated and voted. The player with the most votes at each position made First Team.
Guillory was dominant during conference play winning seven games in eight appearances. He posted a 2.40 ERA and led the GCAC with 87 strikeouts. Additionally, he posted three shutouts and three double-digit strikeout performances. Guillory was crowned GCAC Pitcher of the Week four times and won National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Pitcher of the Week for April 15-21.
Ready emerged as one of the top sluggers in the GCAC. He finished the regular season second in home runs with eight and runs batted in with 52. His .397 batting average ranked third in the conference. Ready was a two-time GCAC Player of the Week winner for his multiple home run performances against Rust College and Philander Smith University.
The GCAC Regular Season champion Wildcats had seven All-GCAC selections. Ivan Del Villar earned First Team designated hitter and Second Team first baseman. He finished the regular season with a conference-high 11 home runs, becoming the first Wildcat to reach double-digits since 2012. Del Villar ranked in the top five in the conference in slugging percentage and RBI. He won GCAC Player of the Week for March 4-10.
Jhan Carlos Javier was selected as All-GCAC First Team outfielder and Amir Mason was selected as All-GCAC First Team second baseman. Javier ranked second in the GCAC with a .421 batting average and a .692 slugging percentage. He is third with seven home runs. This is the second consecutive season, Javier has earned an All-GCAC First Team selection. He was GCAC Player of the Week for March 11-17. Mason hit .322 with 31 runs and 22 RBI. Defensively, he made 66 putouts with 66 assists.
Brendan Mendoza earned All-GCAC Second Team catcher. In 23 games, he is hitting .293 with 12 RBI. Mendoza made 123 putouts with 18 assists. He has caught eight base runners stealing.
The Wildcats will try to keep their run going at the 2024 Hope Credit Union GCAC Sports Baseball Championship as it takes on No. 6 seed Tougaloo College in an elimination game at 2 p.m. Friday.
