
Baseball visits SUNO, closing in on GCAC Title
The first-place Wiley University baseball team will look to move closer to clinching the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season title when it heads to Southern University at New Orleans for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.

The Wildcats (19-16, 13-2 GCAC) are coming off their first GCAC series loss since last season after dropping two of three against Talladega College. They lead the Tornadoes by 1.5 games and need a combination of five wins or Talladega losses to clinch the regular season title.
Amir Mason went 8-for-15 last week with two home runs, seven runs and three RBI. Eddie Garza recorded four hits and scored six runs. Abel Rodriguez Jr. went 5-for-12 with a double, three runs and two RBI.
Southern-New Orleans (13-16, 9-5 GCAC) has won their last two GCAC series and jumped into third place after sweeping Philander Smith University. Noah Ramirez was named GCAC Pitcher of the Week after earning his first victory, holding Philander Smith to five runs with two earned on five hits in seven innings. He struck out eight batters. In seven starts, he leads the team with a 4.45 earned run average and 31 strikeouts. Joey Olveda is 4-0 in eight appearances and four starts. He has a 4.80 ERA with 24 strikeouts in 30 innings.
Chase Lovick leads the team with a .381 batting average. He has scored 29 runs and drove in 10. Eight of his 32 hits have gone for extra bases with five doubles and three triples. Kyler Sheppard is hitting .374 with a team-high 35 runs and 33 stolen bases. He has 17 runs batted in with nine extra-base hits.
This weekend will mark the first time the Wildcats and Knights have met on the diamond. Southern-New Orleans is in their first varsity season.
